The Queen Theater
One could say that Bill Schulman was born into the theater business. In 1926, when he was six years old, his parents moved to Bryan and eventually bought the Dixie and Queen Theaters on Main Street. They opened another theater, the Palace Theater, on the same street in 1928. In the 1970s, the Schulman family branched out into multiplex theaters. Bill Schulman opened the Manor East III Theaters in the Manor East Mall. The Schulman family owned several drive-in theaters in the Bryan area as well. In the 2000s, Bill Schulmanâs two sons and a third partner operated four theaters in Texas. At the time of his death in 2013, Bill Schulman was running the Ritz Theater. Fittingly, the Ritz Theater also served as the site of Bill Schulmanâs funeral.
For centuries, many theaters have claimed to have at least one resident ghost. In the twentieth century, a number of movie theaters began appearing on the lists of haunted places in America. One such theater is the Queen Theater. Built in 1914 at 110 South Main Street, the Queen Theater was remodeled in the Art Deco style in 1939. In 1991, Bill Schulman and his son Morris donated the Queen to a downtown Bryan revitalization group. Bill Schulman lived long enough to see the newly renovated Queen Theater reopen. In 2015, the façade of the Queen Theater was restored.
According to the Shadowlands website, the Queen Theater is haunted. A young projectionist was closing the theater late one evening when he heard a knock on the door. Standing in the doorway was the young manâs co-worker. The two men began to talk, and before long, they were exchanging angry words. Punches were thrown, and finally, the young manâs co-worker left in a huff. An hour or so later, the co-worker returned with a weapon, either a gun or a knife. He charged up the stairs and killed the projectionist in one of the projection rooms. The story ends with the murdererâs arrest and imprisonment.
